BILOXI — A number of the state’s outstanding leaders in high schools athletics were honored during the 19th annual Mississippi Association of Athletic Administrators conference January 11-13

This year’s three-day summit included the first awards recognition luncheon in the event’s history. Athletic administrators were recognized for their years of service, completion of Certified Athletic Administrator coursework and all-around excellence in their schools’ athletic programs through the All-Sports Awards selected by The Clarion-Ledger.

BSN Sports partnered with the MAAA to make Thursday’s banquet happen.

“This is one of the things we looked at it when I was hired as (MAAA executive director) in September,” said Woody Barnett, a long-time coach and athletic administrator as Pearl High School until his retirement in 2013. “We thought a luncheon would be a good fit for this conference and a good way to recognize some deserving administrators.”

More than 200 athletic administrators from around the state as well as MHSAA staff attended the conference, which allows those who take part a chance to exchange ideas and see and hear best practices from experts in their field.

“I think the MHSAA and MAAA have always done a great job of getting good speakers and good topics for this conference,” Mr. Barnett said. “I came to this conference every year wanting to get at least one thing to take back to my school. I am hoping the attendees will have heard or seen something that can make a difference in their schools and ultimately make differences in kids’ lives. Because that is why we are here.”
